Memorial Day events planned for this weekend

Memorial Day is Monday, May 30, with some Moniteau County communities holding activities during the weekend.

California's observance will be held at 10 a.m. at the California City Cemetery at the grave of Albert Cole Jr., in the Masonic Cemetery. The observance will be a joint event between VFW Post 4345 and California Masonic Lodge 183. The public is invited to attend this ceremony recognizing the service of those men and women who have served the nation.

There will be two Memorial Day observances in Tipton. The first is a Monday Mass at St. Andrew's Cemetery, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Members of Edgar Cole American Legion Post 304 will raise the flag, then lower it to half-mast. "Taps" will then be be played.

The second observance is at 10 a.m., at the Masonic Cemetery, past the Maclay Mansion. David Stephenson, pastor of the Tipton First Baptist Church, will speak. A wreath will be placed on the grave site of Edgar Cole with full military honors. There will be a salute of three volleys, followed by the playing of "Taps."

The High Point Memorial Day services with a speaker will be Sunday, May 29, at the High Point Cemetery, beginning at 2 pm.
