Speed limits, stop signs approved in county

Cole County commissioners have approved changes to some speed limits and to adding stop signs at locations on county roads.

Earlier this month, Public Works Director Larry Benz presented the recommendations forwarded by the county's Traffic and Safety Advisory Board.

A request from residents approved at Tuesday's meeting will increase the speed limit on West Brazito Road from 45 mph to 55 mph. Speed checks done over the past several years showed vehicles traveled as high as 65 mph.

Requests from the staff approved were:

Setting the speed limit on Mt. Carmel Road at 45 mph and on the new section of Zion Road, from South Country Club Drive to Route C, at 40 mph. Speed checks on these roads showed drivers averaging 47-59 mph.

The placement of stop signs was approved at several locations: Brinkley Road and Mt. Carmel Road; Clarks Ford Road and Mt. Carmel Road; Tellman Road and Millbrook Road; Pleasant Valley and Old Lohman Road; Cody Drive and Renns Lake Road; and Mehmert Place and Wardsville Road.

No parking painting will be placed on part of Bradley Drive. This is in the Westview Heights area and will allow the sheriff's department to issue tickets when they find a vehicle in violation of the order.

The commission tabled these two requests for time to get residents' input:

Raising the speed limit on Bald Hill Road to 40 mph. It's currently 30-35 mph. Speed checks showed vehicles averaged 38-49 mph. Residents did bring up concerns about speeds in certain parts of the road with more curves.

Removing a yield sign at South Country Club Drive and Zion Road. Residents said they felt a stop sign would be more appropriate due to the increase in homes being built in the area in recent years.
