'Art in the Park' returns to Columbia for 58th time

It's "Art In the Park" weekend in Columbia this weekend.

For the 58th time, artists from all over the country come to Mid-Missouri to show off - and sell - their creative works.

The Columbia Art League event runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Lake Park - just north of Broadway, west of U.S. 63 and ending at Old Highway 63, east of Stephens College and Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

The admission is free.

So is the parking at Boone Hospital, with a free shuttle provided by Columbia's Parks & Recreation Department running from the Boone Hospital parking lot to the park entrance throughout the Art In the Park festival.

The annual event features more than 100 tents where artists in all genres exhibit their works - plus another 30 featuring supporting organizations and some artists doing caricatures, face painting and wood carving, among others.

The Art League's news release may describe it best: "Someone said: I thought it was all paintings.

"No, we cried, it is paintings and much, much more.

"Need a new coffee mug? You'll find it.

"Gorgeous scarf required? Check.

"Space in your yard begging for a stylish sculpture? We have it.

"Fabulous frock needing fabulous necklace? Choices galore.

"Wall behind your sofa needs a colorful painting? Go home with three.

"Gifts needed? Oh, you lucky, lucky shopper.

"After you've shopped 'til you've almost dropped, grab a cool lemonade or some ice cream and be awed by a magician or a juggling stiltwalker.

"Got kids? We got stuff to keep them amused: making art at the Kid's Art Spot, buying something for their own collection at the Young Collector's Tent, designing a tie-dye T-shirt, having their faces painted."

There is entertainment, too.

The Woodcrest Stage features various acoustic performances throughout the festival, including "Remove The Silence," "The Follow" and other regional performers.

COMO Aerial Arts has four half-hour programs scheduled Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. - with a note that if the weather is rainy on Saturday, their performances will be Sunday instead.

Kansas City's StoneLion Puppet Theater has three shows scheduled each day in the Kids Art Spot Tent - Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

And there will be what festival organizers call "Pop-Up Entertainers" - including three magicians, a Juggling Stiltwalker, the "Boone County Hams A Capella" group and the "Momentum Youth Performance Inc." - generally walking through the festival grounds and performing on-the-spot at various times.

The festival goes on rain or shine, the organizers said.
