Dave Koch, of Jefferson City, leaned over a table, studying an auction catalogue offered by an exhibitor Saturday at Fulton VFW Post 2657.

He said he and his brother, who was on his way to the show, were fascinated with any artifacts since they were kids.

"I'm interested in archaeology," he said. "I got started with rocks."

The interest seems to be generational.

"My grandfather was a big artifact collector," Koch said. "I got started about 25 years ago."

Larry Underwood, post commander, and other post members hosted "Indian Artifacts and Antique Gun Show." The VFW hall was filled with displays, visitors and even people seeking breakfast.

Dennis Arbeiter, who runs Rainbow Traders, traveled from Godfrey, Illinois, with his exhibit.

"We've been doing this about four years," he said. "I grew up in the estate business."

Arbeiter said collecting ancient items came from his family background, too.

"My grandfather - he was a Native American - he collected, too," he said. "He would never give up a rock."

He added he is careful about what he collects and sells.

"I specialize in Indian rocks," Arbeiter said. "What we do, I think, is preserve and honor our Native American heritage. I don't sell mortuary items. I do things in a consciousness manner."
