Members of the Fulton Garden Club are putting the final organizational touches on its annual flower show, set for 1-5 p.m. Thursday.

"We want the members of the public to come show with members of the garden club," said Linda Houston, a garden club member coordinating the event.

The flower show, "Celebrating 80 Blooming Years," will be at Callaway Electric Cooperative, 1313 Callaway Electric Cooperative Drive, in Fulton. Entries will be judged by members of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Houston said.

Club members are celebrating the club's 80th anniversary this year, and many events have already happened.

"The Fulton Garden Club would like to share their gardening expertise and results of gardening at the garden show," she said. "Everybody works hard on their own gardens."

Last year, Fran Leake submitted arrangements in a number of categories.

"I won in every category I entered, either a first, second or third," she said. "I'm working on some (arrangements) right now."

Leake said she uses flowers and other materials from her garden, including branches and roots, to create designs.

"I'm even using some pond weeds growing in my pond," she said.

Leake encouraged people to come out and see what's on hand and how they can be a part of the garden club.

"We want to share our design and talent," she said. "It's a passion for some of us, and we want to share it with the community."

Last year, members of the club installed a native plants garden in the center of the U.S. Business 54 circle in downtown Fulton. That garden recently won the Landscape Design Council Award from the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, plus the Operation Wildflower Award from the National Garden Clubs Inc. Other community projects also have been completed.

"The community of Fulton has really benefited from the Fulton Garden Club," Houston said. "We've always tried to have a link with business awards for good landscaping, too."

The club also includes a Junior Garden Club, which has been working with local students. These young people are encouraged to come bring entries for Thursday's show, Houston said.

Visitors to the show will see a lot of different displays, including educational exhibits.

"They will see horticulture, annuals and perennials," Houston added.

Many of the arrangements will be centered around the 1950s and '60s, with retro designs reflecting that era. The judging will take place in the morning.

"From 7-9:30 a.m., we will be there taking entries," Houston said, adding there is no charge to come.

The FGC also will host a nature photography workshop at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. This will be conducted by Charley Blackmore, an avid photographer who loves shooting pictures of the state's Blue Star Memorials. That activity will be at the Callaway County Public Library, 710 Court St. in Fulton.
