Help needed to restore Heck horse

The Moniteau County Historical Society (MCHS) is sponsoring an open house fundraiser Dec. 29 at the home of Rich and Pam Green (The Eitzen Mansion) at 201 N. Oak St. in California.

The event will be held from 4-8 p.m. Light refreshments, including soft drinks, wine and beer, will be served.

The Heck horse will be home soon, and funds are needed for the cost of restoration as well as other expenses associated with its placement in the MCHS Museum.

If you are unable to attend, donations may be sent to MCHS, Shirley Elliott, treasurer, 201 N. High St., California, MO, 65018. Please indicate if you would like your name to be included with the list of donors to be displayed at the museum. Donation amounts will not be listed.

MCHS is a 501(c)(3) foundation. Upon request, donation receipts will be provided.

William Heck purchased a life-size display horse in 1890, and it was placed in the large window of his business, the William Heck Saddlery Co. In 1973, William's son Richard sold the horse, and the William Heck Saddlery went out of business in 1976.

After being lost for many years, Heck the horse was purchased by MCHS in June 2016. Presently, he is at Chase Studio in Cedar Creek
