‘In the Park After Dark’ to begin this weekend

Opening with the summer classic “The Sandlot,” Capitol City Cinema and Jefferson City Parks and Recreation will begin the “In the Park After Dark” film series Saturday at Riverside Park Amphitheater.

Organizers have picked four films they hope will encourage a night of family fun.

“They’re all kind of family-oriented because we’re really trying to get families there,” said Dalton Turner, executive director for Capitol City Cinema.

This is the third year Capitol City Cinema has hosted the series to connect the community through film-related events.

Profits from each showing will go toward supporting the cinema’s regular programming.

“It is very expensive to run a theater because film rights are very expensive,” Turner said.

Food trucks Rebel Taco and Love My Gelato will also be available at each showing, along with a Capitol City CORK booth to serve adult beverages.

The park will open at 7 p.m., giving guests roughly an hour and a half to pick their seats and purchase food before dark.

“The Sandlot” will kick off the series Saturday, with sundown predicted to be at roughly 8:30 p.m., which is when the movie will begin. Typically showings will begin 7:30-8 p.m.

The series will also feature “Back to the Future” on July 27, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” on Sept. 21 and “Hocus Pocus” on Oct. 19.

“We just appreciate the community support and that we can give back to the community with everything that we do,” Turner said.

Tickets are $5 per person. Children younger than the age of 3 get in free and dogs are welcome to attend.
