Young violinist to perform duringSouthside String Quartet concert

The Southside String Quartet, along with members of the Columbia Odyssey Chamber Ensemble, will perform an encore concert Friday featuring a young violinist.

The “Baroque Concerto: Encore” will include classical and baroque music: Joseph Haydn’s “String Quartet No. 1, Op.76,” Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Violin Concerto in E Major” and Wolfgang Mozart’s “Symphony No. 29 in A Major.”

Twelve-year-old Hazel Keithahn will perform the first movement of “Violin Concerto in E Major.” Keithahn won the first Odyssey Chamber Music pre-collegiate concerto competition.

“It happens to be one of my favorite violin concertos, so it’s really neat to see a young person play a piece at this level,” Southside Philharmonic Orchestra Director Patrick Clark said.

Along with the violin concerto, the Southside String Quartet — a subset of the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra — and players from the Odyssey Chamber Ensemble will perform Haydn’s “String Quartet” and Mozart’s “Symphony No. 29 in A Major.”

The Odyssey’s Chamber Ensemble performed a similar “Baroque Concerto” concert last Friday in Columbia. Clark said not everyone could perform this Friday, which is why the performance is slightly different than the earlier one.

Clark said he is excited to conduct “Symphony No. 29,” as it will be the first time he has conducted a piece from Mozart. He noted the symphony adds humor to the concert.

“It is a symphony that is full of incredible wit and this perfect surface that you really have to be listening closely to get the humor in it because there’s a great deal of humor, and that’s what Mozart is really all about,” he said. “It’s a sense of humor disguised by gentility. It’s a wonderful piece.”

The concert is part of the Southside Philharmonic Chamber Music Series, which includes not only the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra but also chamber ensembles of the group, along with outside groups not associated with the orchestra.

Clark said the chamber music series not only allows for collaboration but also encourages more musical performances in the community, even if the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra is unable to perform.

“If we’re only in this city, then it’s limited awareness. If I can go out and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got this orchestra; I’m including other musicians in our concert series,’ there will be more collaboration,” he said. “I also can’t program an orchestra without at least two months between programs; and I probably couldn’t do two months, two months, two months around the year. I probably can’t do more than five programs with the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra, so it allows us to have a more active and vital musical presence without having to put that big horse in motion, which the orchestra is.”

The concert is scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday at the Central United Church of Christ at 118 W. Ashley St. in Jefferson City.

Tickets — $5 for students and $10 for members of the public — can be purchased at the door or in advance at southsidephilharmonic.org.
