Just Desserts to show ‘A Hero’s Impact’

The Helias High School’s IMPACT show choir will perform this year’s show for the first time during the annual Just Desserts from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school’s old gymnasium.

“Our show this year is ‘A Hero’s Impact.’ It is about looking for a hero and finding the hero within,” Helias choir director Jana Fox said.

Fox said IMPACT began learning the show at the end of the summer with a weeklong show choir camp. Choreographer Chris Kindle and Fox met during the summer to come up with music and a theme.

Outside of IMPACT’s performance, approximately 35 students are involved, with many performing solo and group acts throughout the evening.

In addition to musical entertainment, parents of Helias choir students organize donated treats and made a variety of desserts.

“The parents have been working really hard to have great items for desserts and the silent auction,” Fox said. “The parents of these students work really hard to put on this event, and it is through their hard work that the community becomes involved.”

The show choir’s primary fundraising event started 10 years ago, the same year Eric Veile and Sue Logston started the show choir at Helias.

“They came up with the event to raise money for show choir competitions, choreography, costumes and sets,” Fox said. “Two years ago, we used this money in addition to generous donations to purchase show choir platforms. The money raised goes toward competition fees, trips, costumes, choreographer and other expenses that come up for the show choir.”

After their debut performance at Just Desserts, IMPACT will take its talents on the road to four competitions. The first is Jan. 16 at Rock Bridge, with additional contests in Cameron, Battle High School and Northwest Missouri State University.

The community not only can enjoy a fun-filled evening of musical entertainment and desserts; they can also support the talents, sweat equity and ambition these young Helias choir students have put into Just Desserts and their upcoming competition season.

“The students have a great sense of community when they work together on this project. They become leaders and take pride in their hard work,” Fox said. “These students spend many hours working to be a part of this group, and they love sharing their gifts with the audience.”

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from any Helias choir member.
