Capital Arts is playing with the word "transportation" in its new exhibit, scheduled to open Friday in Jefferson City. Titled "Vehicles," the exhibit will feature "cars, trucks, planes, trains, any type of vehicle or transportation."

The exhibit will showcase pieces from local artists surrounding the idea of transportation. Two artists - Bob Colvin and Jennifer Slouha - will be highlighted in the exhibit to give attendees a more detailed sketch of the artists' process and story. Both will have the opportunity to talk about their series at the exhibit's reception.

"This gives the artists an opportunity to speak about their techniques, materials and history," Capital Arts Executive Director Leann Porrello said. "We want to get a good idea of who they are as an artist."

Colvin specializes in photography of classic cars and will have about 10 pieces on display. He shoots much of his photography in the area at car and boat shows, but he also travels to find interesting cars. In fact, he is about to do a photo shoot on Route 66.

Slouha specializes in colored pencil and will have about 30 pieces on display. Her pieces range from published vehicle drawings to portraits and even painted rocks.

The idea for the new themed exhibit comes from a phrase often voiced at Capital Arts.

"We always like to say 'get the wheels turning' to encourage artists to think outside the box - it only made sense to do something about the wheels!" Porrello said.

"Vehicles" will be on display through Aug. 20 at Capital Arts Gallery, 1203 Missouri Blvd. Due to a recent partnership with Jefferson City's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, the gallery now will be open seven days a week - noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

The reception will be 1-4 p.m. Aug. 6 and will feature free food, artist talks at 2 p.m., and demonstrations.

The gallery is encouraging people to bring their classic cars to show along with the art. During the reception, a Delorean will be in the lot outside the gallery.

The gallery and reception are family-friendly, along with being free and open to the public. For more information, visit capitalarts.org or call 573-635-8355.
