What was your best ‘white elephant’ gift?

Christmas is 23 days away, and presents will soon be piled under the tree. Yet, there are a few purchased presents that will join the others; they are brought to the office in time for the company gift exchange.

Secret Santa and common gift swaps are traditional business holiday customs. Then there are the increasingly popular “white elephant” gift swaps, allowing employees to purchase an inexpensive gift to include in the exchange and create a healthy competition for a truly unique present to take home. Families and friends have taken the white elephant gift exchange to new levels, incorporating Christmas poems set to a musical chair style swap and other interesting rules of play into the fun holiday present swap.

In the Dec. 17 Style section, the News Tribune will share some general rules, trendy twists, fun themes and interesting gift ideas for your next white elephant gift exchange. We are also encouraging readers to share the best white elephant gifts they have received or been given for a chance to be included in this feature article. The gift could be nice, useful, hilarious or simply original.

Send us a short description of the white elephant present, and a photo if possible, to Style editor Samantha Pogue at [email protected]. Also, please include your name and phone number. We encourage you to share funny gifts, but please no obscene or inappropriate gift photos.

Deadline to submit white elephant gift descriptions and photos is 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10. For more information, email Pogue or call 573-761-0250.
