Free gospel, bluegrass concert scheduled Nov. 5

Missing Pieces, a local Blue Grass/Southern Gospel band, will hold a free community concert at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at First Presbyterian Church, 324 Madison St. in Jefferson City.

The group harmonizes on Christian and southern gospel music "missing" from current hymnals. Some of the old-time favorites to be featured are "In the Sweet By and By," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "I Saw the Light," "There's a Great Day Coming" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken." The group also plays some secular solo and instrumental tunes such as "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Gentle on My Mind" and "Orange Blossom Special."

"Missing Pieces" is comprised of seven local musicians who first began playing together in May 2016. However, several members of the group have played together in various combinations and venues both in and out of the church scene since 1993. All are accomplished individual musicians.

Tim Gaines, lead guitar, is a well-known local musician who has played with Kapitol Kicks, Capital Players Dinner Theater and numerous special events. He often plays at Shawnee Bluff Winery in Osage Beach, Mangia Italian Eatery in Camdenton and at the annual January NAIAS Auto Shows in Detroit.

John Howland, banjo and vocals, is the general manager of "Missing Pieces." He has played banjo accompaniment for the Jefferson City High School Operetta, Little Theatre and Cantorum. He also sings in the First Presbyterian Church choir and plays with the "Wakarusa River Band" of Eudora, Kansas.

Rosemary Hutson, vocals, honed her ability to harmonize during a long career with "Sweet Adelines" and as a member of First Presbyterian Church choir.

Matt Morris, guitar and vocals, has performed in numerous community theatre productions, the First Presbyterian Church choir, and is a current participant in the praise band. He and Howland have performed guitar/banjo duets at Living Windows, Robert Burns Dinner and other venues since the early '90s.

Emma Ray, lead vocal and piano, sang in the performance choir at Westminster College and with the First Presbyterian Church choir.

Donna Rehagen, fiddle and vocals, is the choir director at St. Joseph Catholic Church and an accomplished fiddler. She has played for several years with the local, country band "Shiloh" and currently plays with "Misty Mountain Bluegrass" of Sullivan and "Good Turn Daily" of Columbia.

Bonnie Verdot, string bass, is a long-time participant in Jefferson City Symphony. She also gives private music lessons and plays in theater pits and other musical events.

There is no admission fee or ticket required for the performance. However, non-perishable food items or a free-will cash donation to support the First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry may be donated.
