Jefferson City AARP Chapter 4401 invites you to our Annual Summerfest on Thursday at the Senior Center at the Mall. The Senior Center is located in the Dillard's wing.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m., Cowboy Tom Whittle, a Central Missouri favorite will perform. Come enjoy everyone's favorite cowboy as he performs country classics, rock and classic pop interspersed with his own brand of humor to keep you laughing and foot tapping. Wear your country finest and enjoy the show.

Our guest speaker is Joy Sweeney, executive director for Council for Drug Free Youth (CDFY).

The council works to serve communities throughout Mid-Missouri to empower youth to stand up and support one another to live healthy and drug free! CDFY is a community coalition, founded in 1983 as an active group of concerned parents seeking to fight the problem of alcohol and other drugs among youth through educational programs and community engagement.

Ms. Sweeney is a very active member of our community. You may have heard her speak about CDFY and the effects of drugs on our youth as a guest on KBIA Radio Friends with Paul Pepper. Her presentation will introduce the programs of the CDFY. She will provide information about underage drinking, marijuana and prescription drugs. Finally, Ms. Sweeney will discuss potential solutions and how everyone can work together to address this problem in our community. Come be part of the solution.

There is no cost to attend Summerfest. "While you do not have to be a member of the local AARP to enjoy Summerfest with us, Chapter 4401 dues are just $6 a year and the day's entertainment is worth at least that much. We welcome new members at any time," said President Charlotte Wening, "The event begins at 12:30 p.m., but come early and join your friends for a great picnic style lunch prior to the meeting," she said.

Lunch at the Senior Center is served from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The suggested cost of the meal is $4 for those over 60 years old. The menu on June 9 includes barbecued chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, three-bean salad and strawberry shortcake.

"Where can you find a meal like that for a price like that?" said Frankie Reames, Senior Center administrator, "Come for lunch every day to eat a well-rounded meal, socialize, and let us do the cooking chores!" Jane Backes agrees, "I've been coming here for two years. You can't cook a good, nutritious meal like this at home for the price. The meat alone would cost you $4."

Once again, several social and service agencies will have exhibits at Summerfest and be available to answer questions. Exhibitors scheduled for the event will include Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC), Consumer Affairs Division of the Department of Insurance, Citizen Liaisons Active in Missouri (CLAIM), and AARP. Vial of Life personal medical information kits will be available. Vial of Life is a joint project of Whaley's Pharmacy and Jefferson City AARP Chapter 4401.

Along with an informative speaker and fun entertainment, there will be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes large and small. Thank you to Wal-Mart, Perkins restaurant, and Roly-Poly for providing some of our door prizes.

"I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to meet with AARP members, learn from the exhibitors and our guest speaker, enjoy the entertainment, and perhaps, win a door prize," said Joyce Angelbeck, program coordinator.
