State unemployment rate drops slightly in August

Missouri’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percent to 3.3 percent in August, the Missouri Department of Economic Development reported Wednesday.

The U.S. unemployment rate remained unchanged in August at 3.9 percent, according to U.S. Labor Department data.

Overall Missouri’s non-farm payroll grew by 1,000 jobs in August, according to a DED news release. Private-sector industries added 2,700 jobs in the month.

Professional and business services industries added 4,000 jobs in August, while the financial and leisure and hospitality industries added 1,100 jobs, according to the DED. Those gains were offset by decreases of 1,800 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities industries; 1,500 jobs in manufacturing; and 1,600 in local government.
