Hibbett Sports' Capital Mall store recently began extensive renovations.

Store Manager Ty Austin said Hibbett Sports wants to expand options for customers who order items online and want to pick them up in store or reserve merchandise online and pay later in store.

"The actual sales floor is shrinking, but we're expanding the back room with more storage space for shoes and stuff like that," Austin said.

Hibbett Sports opened the location in the Capital Mall's B wing in 1998. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company is known for its selection of athletic fashion, including high-end sneakers, jerseys and apparel.

New sales fixtures and paint also will be added. Austin said the store will be given a complete face lift.

Building permits filed with Jefferson City show Hibbett Sports will spend at least $45,000 renovating the space.

About a year ago, Dunham's Sports opened a 48,000-square-foot store across from Hibbett Sports in the mall. Dunham's caters to customers who want rugged outdoor products, Austin said, so Hibbett was not impacted by the second sports store's opening.

Some Hibbett Sports stores focus on selling equipment, while others focus on athletic clothes and sports fashion. Jefferson City customers gravitate to flashy fashion in lieu of athletic equipment, Austin said.

After Hibbett Sports completes the renovation, the local store will carry more high-end tennis shoes like Nike-made Jordan and LeBron sneakers.
