BizBeat: Zales closes Capital Mall store

The Zales jewelry store at Capital Mall in Jefferson City closed Jan. 13, a spokesman for Zales' parent company confirmed Friday.

Zales sat near the center of the shopping center in the mall's C Wing. Kay Jewlers sits not far away in the mall's B Wing.

Ohio-based Signet Jewelers owns the Kay Jewelers, Zales and Jared jewelry store chains. In March 2017, the company announced plans to close 165-170 stores during the fiscal year that ends in early 2018.

At the time, Signet CEO Mark Light blamed the closures on weak mall traffic around stores the chain planned to close. Frank Cirillo, Signet director of public relations, said the Kay Jewlers store at Capital Mall remains open.

"We very much appreciate the opportunity to serve the Jefferson City community and would encourage customers to visit the Kay Jewelers location in the Capital Mall or the Zales location in the Columbia Mall," Cirillo said.
