BizBeat: Casey's set for April opening in Wardsville

A new Casey's General Store under construction in Wardsville should open in early April.

James Pistillo, Casey's vice president of accounting and treasurer, said the store at 1625 Ashbury Way will have four fuel islands, and the interior will feature an array of prepared foods including sandwiches and the company's signature pizza.

Construction at the site started weeks ago. Pistillo said it should open in early April, pending winter weather that could delay the project.

"Construction is moving along," he said.

With a population of 1,500 people, Wardsville fit perfectly in Casey's portfolio of stores. Pistillo said 60 percent of Casey's locations are in towns with fewer than 5,000 people.

"Generally speaking, we focus on consumers in communities that are undeserved," Pistillo said. "(Wardsville) really is our market."

With another location just 15 minutes from downtown Jefferson City, Pistillo said Casey's likes building stores in small towns near cities because people from nearby towns often commute.

"Then we can catch them on the front end and back end of their day," Pistillo said.

Iowa-based Casey's General Stores has about 2,000 stores in Midwestern states.
