Jefferson City firefighters respond to residential blaze

UPDATE: The investigation conducted by the Jefferson City Fire Department determined that the fire was accidental and electrical in origin.

One member of the fire department sustained minor injuries at the scene. The individual was treated and released at a local health care facility. 

INITIAL COVERAGE:

Firefighters were called Monday morning to extinguish a residential fire in southern Jefferson City.

City fire department units responded around 9:40 a.m. to a house in the 1800 block of Mississippi Street where heavy smoke could be seen rising from the split-level structure, according to a release from Fire Chief Matthew Schofield.

A total of 17 personnel, comprised of three fire engines, a squad, a ladder truck, two chief officers and a department chaplain, responded to the scene. The investigation into a cause is ongoing.

There was significant damage to the home, but no injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to assist the occupant.
