This week concluded two weeks of the annual pickup by Allied Waste in Jefferson City. Anything left behind is the responsibility of the property owner.

The annual spring citywide bulky pickup has ended, but not everything has been picked up from the curbs.

Follow the News Tribune’s guide to getting rid of anything left over and see tips from the city’s Planning and Protective Services Department for next year.

Items NOT picked up as part of bulky pickup:

• Trash bags

• Boxes of debris

• Appliances (except TVs and microwaves)

• Tires

• Yard waste

• Lumber

• Rocks

• Bricks

• Concrete

• Waste oil

• Car parts

• Acid batteries

• Remodeling material (i.e., sheetrock, etc.)

• Lumber, guttering or other items more than 4 feet long

• Loose piles of anything

What to do now?

Anything left on your property after the end of bulky pickup is your responsibility, said Janice McMillan, director of Planning and Protective Services.

City code enforcement receives a list from Republic Services of all addresses with items not picked up. Code enforcement then contacts property owners to notify them to clean the property.

Anything left can be taken to the city’s landfill on Moreau River Access Road, though it does cost a fee to use.

Acceptable materials can also be brought to the yard waste drop off site at 2417 Southridge Drive, free of charge for all Jefferson City residents.

Glass recycling drop-off sites are at the Save-a-Lot parking lot on East McCarty Street, the front parking lot of the Federal Recycling Building on West Main Street, McKay Park on Southridge Drive and at 2284 Hyde Park Road.

The city also offers household hazardous waste disposal, and appointments can be scheduled by calling (573) 634-6410.

Tips for next year

Remember, if it fits in your trash cart, it is not considered a bulky item and likely will not be picked up. Any loose material, such as clothing, also will not be picked up if simply set on the curb.

Any items left over after pickup are the property owners’ responsibility, and city code enforcement officials can cite owners for not cleaning up the property.
