Primary election ballots finalized

Several candidates file on last day

The deadline for candidates to file in Missouri for county, state, legislative and judicial offices for this year's Aug. 2 primary and Nov. 8 general elections passed at 5 p.m. Tuesday - with several new candidates entering races on the last day.

Winners of the party primaries for each office will face each other in November - but still could face write-in challengers in the general election, even if no candidates filed in other parties' primaries.

Among those filing was former state senator and Kansas City mayor Charles Wheeler, who will run as a Democrat for Missouri governor against Attorney General Chris Koster in a primary.

Wheeler was elected to the state Senate in 2002 to a four-year term and served with Koster. Wheeler also was mayor of Kansas City from 1971-79.

Cole County

Two candidates filed for Cole County races Tuesday.

Democrat Ed Williams filed as a candidate for Eastern District Commissioner. He ran in 2012 against current commissioner, Republican Jeff Hoelscher.

Also filing Tuesday was JoDonn Chaney, running as a Republican in the race for public administrator. There are four candidates looking to fill the seat, as current Public Administrator Marilyn Schmutzler is retiring.

The final list of candidates in Cole County office races is as follows (incumbents are indicated by *):

Eastern District Commissioner: Democrat - Ed Williams; Republican - *Jeff Hoelscher.

Western District Commissioner: Republican - *Kris Scheperle, Janet Ousley.

State and federal offices

Tuesday's last day of filing saw changes in three Mid-Missouri state-level races - with two candidates filing for offices and one withdrawing.

Former state Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O'Fallon, filed Tuesday as a challenger to incumbent U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer.

And Tom Smith, D-Washington, filed Tuesday to challenge incumbent Rep. Justin Alferman, R-Hermann, in the Nov. 8 general election.

The withdrawal - Bruce Sassman, R-Bland, who had filed as a candidate for the House District 62 seat now held by incumbent Tom Hurst, R-St. Thomas - leaves a total of five Mid-Missouri House races where the incumbent has no primary or general election opponent.

The other four are Republican Reps. Travis Fitzwater, Holts Summit; Caleb Jones, Columbia; Rocky Miller, Lake Ozark; and Diane Franklin, Camdenton.

There also are two area circuit judge races with no primary or general election opponents - incumbents John Beger, R-Rolla, and Ken Hayden, R-Barnett.
