Lady Jays execute in soccer win against Gremlins

The Jefferson City Lady Jays had a plan.

There was a pretty good chance Monday night's game against the Sedalia Sacred Heart Gremlins was going to be a bit of a mismatch. So the Lady Jays got specific about things they wanted to work on during a game situation.

It was time well spent.

"We wanted to work on some patterns, we wanted to score in some specific ways," Lady Jays coach Tom Guinn said after Jefferson City blanked Sacred Heart 6-0 at the 179 Soccer Park.

The outcome was never in doubt. Jefferson City scored on its first four shots on net on its way to a 5-0 halftime lead.

"When we scored, it was the way we wanted to score them," Guinn said. "They weren't the type of goals where the ball bounces off six people in front of the net before it goes in. Sometimes you have to have them and you'll take them. But we wanted to work for ours tonight."

Jefferson City got on the board in the first five minutes on a goal by Tayler LePage. The game stayed 1-0 until Jefferson City scored three times in a three-minute span midway through the half.

McKenzie Gourley, LePage and Katie Tambke recorded the goals to make it 4-0.

The final goal of the half came from Taylor Burkhead after a corner kick.

Jefferson City's final goal came midway through the second half when LePage scored her third of the game, putting back a rebound.

"They were fun goals to watch, she finished them well," Guinn said.

Jefferson City finished with a 26-1 edge in shots against Sacred Heart (1-1).

"We possessed the ball really well, if you can keep the team off the other teams foot, they can't beat you," Guinn said. "We did that very well, especially in the defensive backfield."

Megan Foster was in goal for much of the contest before being replaced by Megan Duffield in the final minutes.

"We always want more, there were things here and there we could have done better," Guinn said. "But we did some good things, I'm proud of the way we played."

Not that he was 100 percent satisfied.

"Sacred Heart really worked hard, they were pushing us," Guinn said. "The question is can we do those things against some of the better teams on our schedule."

Jefferson City (2-1) plays its first road game of the season Wednesday against Parkview in Springfield.

There was no junior varsity game Monday.
