Vanderbilt takes finale in series with Missouri

COLUMBIA - It wasn't worth the wait, or the work getting it in, for the Missouri baseball team Sunday.

The Tigers pushed back the start time of their game with Vanderbilt by an hour to accommodate the weather, then had to play through the rain and cold while suffering a 17-7 loss to the Commodores.

Missouri committed eight errors to Vanderbilt's two and was outhit 17-10.

"Embarrassing performance," Missouri coach Tim Jamieson said. "That's about all I can say as it relates to that."

Jamieson refused to blame the weather for the errors.

"They had the same weather we had, the same field," he said. "It's just too many guys whose minds weren't in the right places."

Missouri is now 0-13 all-time against Vanderbilt.

The Commodores scored six in the top of the third, while the Tigers scored two in the bottom of the frame.

Vanderbilt added two in the fourth and one in the fifth to go up 9-2. Missouri got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Vanderbilt got two in the seventh and six in the eight to lead 17-3. Missouri got four in the bottom of the ninth - three of them on a home run by Zach Lavy - but it was too little, too late.

Austin Tribby (2-3), the first of six Missouri pitchers, took the loss. He gave up six runs, although only one was earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out one in 1 2/3 innings.

No Tiger pitcher lasted more than two innings in the game.

Ryan Howard had two hits and one RBI for Missouri, while Kirby McGuire had one hit and two RBI. Johnny Balsamo had two hits and Jack Klages had one hit and one RBI.

Vanderbilt, which swept the three-game series, is now 20-4 overall and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference. Missouri, which is 14-12 and 0-6, plays the Saint Louis Billikens at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
