Your Opinion: Response to Blunt on Clean Power Plan

Dear Editor:

In response to Bob Watson's article, "Blunt recommends state wait for Clean Power Plan," March 15, I offer this as a response to Sen. Blunt.

Senator, thank you for wanting to protect me from a "doubling" electric bill if the Clean Power Plan (CPP) is allowed to go forward. But while I'm highly skeptical that electric bills will double because of the CPP, I have zero doubt that global warming is a more serious threat to my family.

Delaying the Clean Power Plan will allow CO2 emissions to rise to dangerous concentrations in our atmosphere.

We must reduce emissions by 80 percent by 2050 or devastating changes in our environment will be irreversible. Temperature will climb, sea levels will rise, storms will increase. And how about your family? Won't your grandson, Matt's son, be in his forties in 2050?

If you're worried about my utility bill, please take a look at the research by Citizens' Climate Lobby on a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend. This plan would help me pay my utility bill while we transition to clean energy. In my case, the dividend would even provide some additional cash for groceries.

On March 23, at 7 p.m., at the Missouri River Regional Library in Jefferson City, Citizens' Climate Lobby is hosting a discussion about Climate Change Solutions. I wish you or a member of your staff could join us.
