Missouri wrestling tied for fifth

NEW YORK - The Missouri wrestling team is tied for fifth after the first day of the NCAA Division I Championships at Madison Square Garden.

Four Tigers remain in the championship bracket.

J'Den Cox picked up five team points, winning by fall (1:18) against Rutgers and by major decision (15-4) against Chattanooga at 197 pounds. Cox wrestles Princeton next in quarterfinals.

Daniel Lewis (165) and Willie Miklus (184) each scored four team points.

Lewis won by fall (5:39) against Edinboro and by decision (5-1) against Stanford. He wrestles Rider with a chance to reach the semifinals. Miklus won by major decision against Oregon State (15-6) and Buffalo (9-1). He wrestles Penn in quarterfinals.

Lavion Mayes (149) added two team points, defeating Oklahoma in a 3-2 decision and Duke in a 5-3 decision. He wrestles Oklahoma State in the quarters. Blaise Butler (174) picked up 1.5 team points, losing a 16-9 decision to Oklahoma before beating Princeton with a 13-2 major decision in the consolation bracket. He faces Lehigh next in wrestlebacks. Barlow McGhee (125) won a 3-2 decision with Wyoming before losing a 3-1 tiebreaker to Northern Iowa. He earned one team point and faces Pittsburgh next.

Zach Synon, Matt Manley and LeRoy Barnes each fell twice. Synon (133) lost a 13-7 decision to Wisconsin and a 9-4 decision to Central Michigan. Manley (141) lost by technical fall to Penn State and by major decision (12-3) to Appalachian State. Barnes (27-10) lost a 7-3 decision to Cornell and a 4-3 tiebreaker to Brown. Their tournaments are over.
