Missouri softball sweeps doubleheader

COLUMBIA - The No. 13 Missouri softball team used four pitchers to shut out Western Illinois twice Wednesday night at University Field, taking both games of the non-conference doubleheader 6-0.

Cheyenne Baxter and Paige Lowary split time in the pitcher's circle in Game 1, combining to allow five hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

Lowary (9-2) earned the win, throwing five innings of relief. Baxter pitched the first two innings for the Tigers.

In Game 2, Tori Finucane and Danielle Baumgartner combined to allow four hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Baumgartner (8-1) earned the win and accounted for five of the strikeouts in four innings of relief. Finucane pitched the first three innings.

The Tigers scored four in the first, one in the second and one in the fourth in Game 1.

Regan Nash, Sami Fagan and Raime Cohen each stole a base in the first inning.

Nash scored the first run of the game when Chloe Rathburn reached on a fielder's choice. Cohen and Fagan both scored on Emily Crane's triple to left. Amanda Sanchez doubled in Crane for the fourth run.

Fagan doubled to center to drive in Taylor Gadbois in the second.

Natalie Fleming scored the final run of the game off Rathburn's sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Gadbois and Fagan each had three hits.

Emily Ira (3-9) took the loss for Western Illinois, giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts in six innings.

In Game 2, Missouri scored four in the first, one in the second and one in the third.

Nash and Fagan each stole a base in the first inning.

Nash scored on a Rathburn single to center field for the first run of the game.

Fagan touched home plate on a Crane sacrifice fly before Rylee Pierce smacked a two-run home run to left to make it 4-0, her fifth homer of the season.

Fagan singled in Chase Nelson in the second. Pierce scored on Kristen Mack's sacrifice fly in the third.

Kacyee Hart (2-8) took the loss for Western Illinois, allowing six runs (five earned) while walking five in six innings.

Nash, Fagan, Rathburn, Pierce and Nelson accounted for Missouri's five hits.

The Tigers are 17-4 heading into a three-game series at New Mexico State, which starts with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Saturday.
