Chairman of performing arts at Temple College joins JC Community Symphonic Band at upcoming concert

The lead alto saxophone player with the Temple Jazz Orchestra will be the guest musician at The Jefferson City Community Symphonic Band concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Lutheran High School.

Colin Mason is the chairman of the department of performing arts at Temple College in Temple, Texas, where he teaches humanities, saxophone studio and is founder/leader of the Temple College faculty jazz group called TC7.

The local band conductor Paul Hinman and Mason once were colleagues at East Tennessee State University.

Mason has performed across the U.S., as well as at European jazz festivals. He is an active performer, clinician and solo and ensemble judge.

Mason holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education with a jazz emphasis from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies performance from San Diego State University.

The afternoon concert will include "Procession of the Nobles" by Rimsky-Korsakov, "Lindberg Variations" by Robert Sheldon, a concerto for saxophone with Laurie Carr accompanying, an Irish lullaby Dierin De', a medley of Broadway showtunes from the 1940-70s, Alfred Reid's Suite for Band, an alto sax solo to persuasion and, in recognition of its 25th anniversary, the soundtrack to the movie Robin Hood.

The community band is in its sixth season, and its concerts are free to the public.
