Chamois falls to Glasgow in Class 1 sectionals

STURGEON, Mo. - Led by the dynamic duo of Kennedy Davis and Adam Monnig, the Glasgow Yellowjackets made life tough for the Chamois Pirates on both ends of the floor and captured a 44-27 win in a Class 1 sectional game Tuesday night.

The junior post players both listed at 6-foot-4 were similar in another way, as both posted double-doubles and combined to outscore Chamois by themselves in the contest at Sturgeon High School.

Davis racked up a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Monnig added 10 points and 13 boards, and they altered several shots on defense as the Pirates shot just 19 percent from the field.

"They're a really good defensive team, and well-coached, and they made it tough on us," Chamois coach Kyle Burkett said.

Chamois was just 1-of-12 (8 percent) from the field in the first quarter, which ended with Glasgow holding a 14-6 lead. Davis did most of the damage, as he was a perfect 4-of-4 in the frame for eight points. He also had four rebounds and one block in the period.

"He's a big, strong kid," Burkett said, "and underneath the basket, you can't let him catch there. If he catches there, he's putting it in. And if he misses, he's getting the rebound and then putting it in."

Aaron Brandt did his best to keep Chamois close, scoring all of the Pirates' points in the quarter on his way to 16 for the game.

Chamois did better during the next two quarters. Glasgow had a slim 9-8 scoring edge in the second quarter to take a 23-14 edge into halftime, then both teams scored eight in the third to make it 31-22 in favor of the Yellowjackets.

Glasgow had a 13-5 scorind edge in the final period to pull away, as the final margin was its biggest lead of the game.

The Yellowjackets did a good job of clamping down on Brandt after halftime, holding him to just one layup in the third and a 3-pointer in the fourth.

Devin Flake was next for the Pirates with five points, while Lucas Kuhn and Anthony Keilholz closed out the scoring with three apiece.

"They made our other guys shoot the ball - they weren't going to let Devin or Aaron get too many open shot attempts by any means," Burkett said.

With Flake being the only senior, the young Pirates (12-15) hope to build on a late-season run that saw them win four straight and six of eight before Tuesday's loss.

"(The district championship game) was nice, for the young kids to play in a big game," Burkett said. "I think we can build on that next year, or we're hoping to, anyway.

"Then in this game, another big one, they saw the level of competition they'll have to play with and beat if they're going to go further."
