Your Opinion: Abortion and the 14th Amendment

Dear Editor:

The Constitution would never have been approved if voters had the foreknowledge that activist Supreme Court justices would allow the federal government near total control over states and We the People. The 9th and 10th Amendments were passed to ensure the federal government was held in check. They are basically ignored by the court.

The 1st Amendment, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," has been twisted by activist judges so that it now means that the federal government can prevent prayer in school and so that it can prevent someone from having a Bible on their desk at work.

In 1868 three quarters of the states would never have approved the 14th Amendment had they known that it was going to be twisted to mean that the federal government had the power to prevent states from protecting the unborn. I urge you to read the amendment at https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxiv It is less than 500 words.

Abortion may be legal but in many states it is only legal because we have allowed the federal government to usurp authority it was never given. Slavery was legal in our nation but that did not make it right.

I can understand how a secular humanist could support abortion, even when it is used as a method of birth control for those too lazy and/or irresponsible to use readily available forms of contraception. I can't understand how a Christian can support abortion. I find nothing in Scripture that leads me to believe anything other than that we have a soul from the point of conception.

I support a woman's right to have control over her body, right up to the point where her actions cause a new life to be formed. That new life should have the same 14th Amendment, right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as the rest of us have. Those rights should include being fed, clothed and housed by the people whose actions created the new life.
