Missouri woman charged with endangerment in girl's shooting

GRANDVIEW, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri woman has been charged with a felony after her 5-year-old granddaughter was shot in the leg.

The Jackson County prosecutor's office filed a child endangerment charge Tuesday against 43-year-old Taprill Barnett, of Grandview. No attorney is listed for Barnett in online court records.

The probable cause statement says the shooting happened Monday night after the victim came for a visit. Barnett told authorities she slid gun she was cleaning under a couch when the victim and another child ran into the living room.

Barnett told authorities she left the room but returned when she heard a "pop" and the victim crying.

Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said in a written statement that it is "fortunate" the child wasn't killed. She says storing weapons safely is "absolutely life and death."
