Candidates for city, schools offices have until 5 p.m. today

The filing period for local races ends at 5 p.m. today.

Filing for the Jefferson City Council, the Jefferson City School Board and the Blair Oaks School Board began last month and ends at 5 p.m. today. Candidates will appear on the April 5 ballot.

Jefferson City Council

First Ward Councilman Rick Prather, 2nd Ward Councilman J. Rick Mihalevich, 4th Ward Councilman Glen Costales and 5th Ward Councilman Larry Henry all refiled to retain their seats.

Erin Wiseman, an attorney with Brydon, Swearengen & England, filed for the 3rd Ward council seat currently occupied by Bob Scrivner. Scrivner is not eligible to run for re-election as he has served the full four, two-year terms council members are limited to.

On Friday, Bud Fisher filed to run against Mihalevich for the 2nd Ward seat, providing the only contested council race so far.

Each council seat is for a two-year term. To run for City Council, candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time of election, be a U.S. citizen and be a qualified voter of the city. They also must have lived in the city for at least one year before the election and lived in the ward they wish to represent for six months before the election.

There is no filing fee to run for office; however, candidates must have endorsements from three people who live in the area the candidate wishes to represent, as well as a Department of Revenue Form 5120, which must be filed with the Missouri Department of Revenue before a candidate can file for office.

The endorsements must be signed either before a notary public or before the city clerk.

Jefferson City School Board

For the Jefferson City School Board, Dennis Nickelson and Doug Whitehead's three-year terms end this spring. Both Nickelson and Whitehead have said they will not seek re-election.

Lorelei Schwartz, an accountant with Schwartz & LeCure LLC, and Rich AuBuchon, of the AuBuchon Law Firm LLC, have both filed for the open board seats.

Each seat is for a three-year term.

Blair Oaks School Board

For the Blair Oaks School Board, incumbents Greg Russell and John Weber have refiled for their positions.

Kimberley Sprenger, the manager for research and administrative services for the Department of Social Services, made the election a three-person race after filing on Tuesday.

Board candidates must be U.S. citizens and resident taxpayers of the district who have resided in Missouri for at least one year.

They must be at least 24 years old and cannot be a registered sex offender.

Candidates will file all required campaign disclosure reports for all previous elections as a candidate and will have paid all fees assessed by the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Each seat is for a three-year term.
