Your Opinion: Don't forget, abortion is legal

Dear Editor:

Well, the "abortion" topic has heated these good pages of the News Tribune for the recent past. I've made the points I wished to, so I will leave it (for now). The below is taken from a "face-book" status for writer-actor Amanda Duarte, written on Sept. 19, 2015.

"I don't care if Planned Parenthood provides nothing but abortion services. I don't care if it's a million-story abortion super-park with abortion waterslides and an abortion electrical parade. Abortion is legal. Abortion is legal. If I read one more "defense' of Planned Parenthood that says "it's not just abortions!' or "only 5 percent of what they do is abortion! And abortions aren't federally funded!' I'm going to abort myself.

Abortion is legal, culturally necessary, and good for humanity. It has been and will be practiced for millennia. It is essential. It is a fact. By minimizing, denying or apologizing for this fact, you are allowing these venal anti-woman Nazis to frame this debate and continue to chip away at this essential right. Abortion is not tragic. It is not painful. It is a fact. It is a right. Demand it, fight for it, and for the sake of the women who have given their lives to defend it, stop apologizing for it."

Personally I believe the truth about Planned Parenthood is useful (only a small portion of their services involves abortion; (roughly 3 percent, depending upon how you do the math and the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funds to be used for abortion). Duarte did go "full Godwin" with the Nazi reference; however her point should be well taken.

Abortion with some restriction is legal in these United States. In my opinion, politicians have clear duty to protect the rights and liberty of the citizenry. They do not have right to legislate their theology; (if you believe they do, please go to a computer and look up the Constitution of the United States, start with the First Amendment).

The vast majority of restrictions to abortion enacted in various states serve zero valid medical purpose; they exist solely to deny access to a medical service that some in the citizenry and many in the political arena do not agree with. In some cases, these restrictions not only delay abortion, they increase the medical risk to the women involved.

This is morally outrageous. From people who preen with self-pride at their own morality.
