BizBeat: Indian cuisine returns to Jefferson City

Curry House, a partial reincarnation of recently closed Everest Cafe and Bar, is reintroducing Jefferson City to Indian cuisine after opening Dec. 28.

Everest Cafe and Bar closed in late November after two years in business after owner Devi States, a native of Kathmandu, Nepal, and doctor of health sciences, decided to dedicate more of his time to the Himalayan Family Healthcare Project, a nonprofit organization he founded in 2009.

Ganesh Dhamale, owner/operator of Curry House, bought the business at 2403 Missouri Blvd. from the States family and moved to Mid-Missouri from Alaska to run it.

Curry House will continue serving authentic Indian and Nepaliese cuisine as its predecessor did, but does not serve the Korean options previously available.

Dhamale, a native of Maharastra, India, said he plans to maintain the restaurant's health-conscious menu, including vegetarian options, while adding a few new dishes of his own.

"It's a healthy concept, same as before ... less oil and no greasy food. Everything we make from scratch," he said. "It's a mild food unless somebody asks for spicy."

Curry House offers menu items with chicken or lamb; Dhamale said he plans to remove beef from the menu.

The restaurant offers a lunch buffet from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5-8:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; it is closed on Sundays.
