Helias drops wrestling duals to Nixa, Ozark

It was a learning experience for the Helias Crusaders.

And Bryant Gaines kept a list of things the Crusaders need to work on.

"I have about 15 or 20 things," the Crusaders wrestling coach said Friday night after Helias dropped duals to Nixa and Ozark at Fleming Fieldhouse.

"We know some things we need to work on."

Helias was open at three weights, which made the final team scores a little more lopsided than they might have been. But Gaines was looking for more consistency from the Crusaders.

"We had some guys wrestle good, we had some guys not wrestle so well," he said. "We had too many stale moments tonight, we weren't moving like we usually do.

"We lost a little bit of what makes us a team."

The Crusaders were strong in the lower weights where Evan Winder at 106 pounds, Randy Salaz at 113, Zack Carr at 120 and Drake Winder at 132 all were 2-0.

Drake Winder won by fall and by decision, while Salaz won his matches by technical fall and by decision. Evan Winder and Carr both won by once by fall and once by forfeit.

One of the better matches for the Crusaders came at 160. Nick Carr trailed 7-3 midway through his match against Nixa before rallying for a 10-7 victory.

Carr finished 1-1 on the night, as did Nick Gaines at 138 and Mason Field at heavyweight. Field won his match against Nixa 4-1 in overtime.

"We got a taste of Class 4 wrestling," Gaines said.

Helias, now 5-3 in duals, is back in action Tuesday at Fatima. The Crusaders will wrestle Fatima and Blair Oaks.
