Right off the parking lot of the West Edgewood greenway is a hiking/biking trail that's mostly been hidden for the past 10 years, until a bridge was erected over Wears Creek there last year.
Now, volunteers are polishing this gem for outdoor lovers by clearing the 2.7-mile loop and extending it to about 3.5 miles.
The Frog Hollow Nature Trail is one more option for city residents to have a quick getaway into the woods, said Cary Maloney. He's a volunteer with the Osage Region Trail Association, which is helping with the project.
"You can enjoy the outdoors in a peaceful setting," he said.
Jim Bell, another volunteer with the association who was working on the extension on Sunday, said: "It's a great resource in your back yard. Come out and enjoy the place."
The extension will not only add length to the trail, but will make the exit point of the trail less steep, Maloney said.
He said the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce donated use of the land for the trail extension to the city's Parks Department.
Some hikers on the trail on Sunday were checking out the new section, which can be traversed by foot easier than by bike right now.
Volunteer workers were clearing paths and carrying rock fill to level out areas of the trail.
Sasha Vasko just discovered the single-track trail on Saturday, and he and his wife, Maria, decided to come on Sunday to help with the project.
"Having something like that in the middle of town is awesome," he said.
