An early Neil Simon play is the latest production for Scene One Theatre.
"Fools" is a 1981 play by Simon that did not please the critics and closed early on Broadway. However, the public loved it and the play has been produced by groups all over the country and Europe.
The play is based on Russian fables. It has a definite beginning, middle and end, and a moral.
This is the story of Leon, who has landed a great teaching job in a Ukrainian village. There is a problem because the village is cursed with Chronic Stupidity. If Leon stays, he will come under this curse. The problem for him is that he wants to stay because he has fallen in love.
"There is a lot of comedy and satire in the play," said Director Jack Renner.
The setting for the show is the town square and a doctor's office, and because of this it is performed in three-quarter round.
Jerico Whitaker plays Leon. The remainder of the cast includes Doug Richardson, Dick Dalton, Jim Rhodes, Chris Kennison, Sherry Hoskins, Mark Miles, Mary Jo LaCorte, Courtney Desko and John Wells.
"We are having a ball with this show. The cast still laughs and enjoys the comedy," Renner said.
Assisting Renner is Brad Jones, and Barb Schmutzler is production manager. Schmutzler has been on the local theater scene for more than 20 years.
"I have been in theater for many years and never stop learning. This show was no exception," Renner said. "If you like to laugh you will enjoy 'Fools.'"
