The new Cole County website - colecounty.org - is ready for the public to use.

Over the last month, representatives of every county office have been training on the new system.

The website was designed by Civic Plus, a company that designs websites for more than 50 cities around the country.

The new website has features such as an interactive calendar for county events and the capability to pay fees. County departments and elected officials are responsible for maintaining the content.

"We want to update it as much as possible," said County GIS Manager Melissa Johnson. "We don't just want to put something up and let it sit there. This system does have the ability to put a time limit on posts so things will be on in a timely manner."

Johnson said they plan to have a link to show what jobs are available in county government and where people can apply for them.

The up-front cost is $39,000, with $5,850 for yearly maintenance afterward.

The company also will make an app for residents to access the site from their iPhones. The initial cost to the county will be $5,000, plus $1,500 a year for maintenance. There's no word on how soon the app will be available.

The money to pay for the project came from the county's capital improvement sales tax fund.
