COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Versailles Tigers won a state wrestling trophy Saturday night, ending a lengthy quest.

How long? Try about a decade and a half.

"I was talking about this with my athletic director (Friday) and I said, "This is about a 15-year work in progress,'" Versailles head coach Shawn Brantley said. "There's been some guys who have come up that were good on their own, but we haven't had a good group to put together all at once.

"So it has been a process. We've had to take some lumps here and there and learn from them. And we have, and we've improved. That's what we have to keep doing to be that top-level program and stay there."

With trophies being awarded to the top four teams in each class, Versailles came into the Class 1 championships knowing they had a shot at one of them.

Seneca ended up leading the way with 160 points, followed by Whitfield (154.5) and Marceline (109.5). Versailles' 81.5 points were good enough to beat out Lawson by 3.5 points for the final piece of hardware.

Brantley said Saturday was the culmination of series of steps.

"We got over the hump of not being able to get to state, then we got here that first year and didn't perform well," he said. "Last year we got here and we had a good tournament, but we didn't do what it takes to get to that upper level.

"We've kept learning from it and now we're closer to where we want to be, but we're not there yet."

For the second straight year, the Tigers had four wrestlers earn medals - Dylan Ballew (182) was second, Adam Guinn (160) was third, Willie Schotte (170) was fourth and Dalton Schmidt (152) was fifth.

"We've got six returning state qualifiers, and one medalist (Schotte), coming back next year, so there's no reason we can't be right back here in the same spot," Brantley said.

But the Tigers will lose three important seniors in Schmidt, Guinn and Ballew.

"Last year at the banquet we talked about how that group of seniors was the first one that got everything going," Brantley said. "They were a very good group, but this one was the talented team. (This year's seniors) were the ones who we were pinpointing, knowing they could do some good things, and they have."

Ballew (52-3) was the lone Tiger to advance to a championship match Saturday, where he lost by fall to South Harrison's Austin Ward (45-0).

"He made one mistake, the one mistake he couldn't make, and he got pinned," Brantley said.

Guinn (52-7) started the day winning by medical forfeit against Lathrop's Dawson Beane in the fourth round of wrestlebacks. He then won 4-3 against Hallsville's Jacob Wilhoite in the third-place match.

Schotte (43-7) opened Saturday with a win by fall against Hallsville's Hunter Tessman in the fourth-round wrestlebacks before losing 10-3 to Carrollton's Josh Frank.

Schmidt (45-13) lost 2-0 in the fourth round of wrestlebacks to Marceline's Andrew Edgar before topping Wentworth Military Academy's Jarek Brown in the fifth-place match.

"Willie had a wonderful state tournament - he and Dalton probably had the best tournament, all in all," Brantley said. "Adam had a good tournament, got banged-up here and there, but Willie in particular was very impressive."

Brantley said the Tigers, and their Tri-County Conference mates, are seeing success together.

"It's wonderful - the more of them wrestling, the better," he said. "Eldon had three state qualifiers for the first time, Osage had a really good tournament here, Blair Oaks had a good tournament. It helps - we push each other and we get better from it."

Three other area competitors were in action Saturday in Class 1.

Tipton's Robert Gutierrez ended up with a fourth-place finish at 120 pounds.

He started the day with a win by fall against Gage Rush of Plattsburg in the fourth round of wrestlebacks before losing 4-0 in the third-place match to Tyler Hachman of Lawson.

Gutierrez's finish helped the Cardinals finish in 32nd place with 15.5 points.

The Fatima Comets had two competitors on Saturday, as Caleb Schroeder was fourth at 152 and Cody Huhn took fifth at 138.

Schroeder faced the same two opponents Schroeder did, just in the opposite order. He opened with a 2-0 win against Brown in the fourth-round wrestlebacks, then lost 3-1 to Edgar in the third-place match.

Huhn started out with a 5-0 loss to Maysville's Kaleb Popplewell in the fourth-round wrestlebacks and then lost 9-0 to Hunter Dalinghaus of Lathrop.

Fatima ended up in 19th place with 34 team points.
