NIXA, Mo. - It's getting to be a habit. A good habit.
The Jefferson City Jays claimed their third consecutive district wrestling title Saturday in dominating fashion, winning by 71.5 points.
"The kids have done a good job, it says a lot abut this senior class," Jays coach Phil Cagle said. "The senior class has done a great job of leading this team."
The Jays had nine wrestlers advance to the finals of their respective weight classes and claimed five individual titles.
Winning titles were:
• Tanner Irwin at 132 pounds. He was 4-0 in the tournament and won by fall against Nicholas Baxter of Nixa in the title match.
• Jacob Brune at 160. Brune also was 4-0 in the event and defeated D.J. Brashfield-Thogerson of Lee's Summit West 3-2 to take the title.
• Logan Moriarty at 170. Moriarity was 4-0 this weekend. He won by medical forfeit in the title match.
• Rashaun Woods at 182. Wood went 3-0 in the tournament, taking the title with a 3-1 decision against Donovan Benetti of Nixa.
• Jalen Martin at 195. Martin was 3-0 in the event, winning 8-0 against Todd Angel of Waynesville for the title.
Peter Kuster at 120, Christian Mayberry at 126, Gavin DeWitt at 145 and Dennis Barnes at 152 were all second for Jefferson City. Tekoah Sage was third at 220, while Zach Hurley was fourth at 138.
"We wrestled a lot of great matches, we were wrestling good kids," Cagle said. "The kids that didn't win don't feel sorry themselves, now it's time to get ready for state."
The 11 qualifiers ties for the second-most in school history. It has been done four times before, the last in 2004. Jefferson City had 12 qualifiers when it won the state title in 1997.
The Class 4 state tournament begins Thursday at Mizzou Arena.
