Local man faces rape, assault charges

A Jefferson City man is charged with first-degree rape and first-degree domestic assault for a Friday incident.

Sylvester Vernell, 48, of 309 Case Ave., was taken into custody by Fulton police over the weekend after fleeing from the Capital City.

According to Jefferson City Police, officers were called to the the 1100 block of Madison Street just before 8 a.m. Friday.

The victim said she was with Vernell at the Best Western Hotel on Christy Drive between midnight and 1 a.m. Friday.

Vernell tried to remove her clothes then forced himself on the victim, and the two ended up on the bathroom floor.

There, Vernell had sex with the victim against her will.

While talking with authorities, the victim said Vernell had assaulted her over a three-day period by choking, kicking and hitting her with his hands as well as a bat.

She said Vernell also forced her to take Xanax.

The victim did have visible bruises on her face neck and body. She also had a fractured rib, swelling on her brain and a punctured lung.

Vernell has two prior domestic violence convictions.
