Lincoln softball falls to 0-5

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - The Lincoln University softball team wrapped up a winless trip to the Southern Arkansas University Invitational with a 9-5 loss to Newman University on Sunday.

Lincoln (0-5) had a season-high 12 hits in the loss, matching Newman's total, but left 10 runners on base and had three errors.

Newman (2-3) got the scoring started with a run in the bottom of the second.

The Blue Tigers exploded for three runs in the top of the third, but the Jets had an answer, putting up four in the bottom of the frame. Lincoln's came in on a two-run RBI double by Megan Heimbaugh and an RBI single by Macie Kinsey.

After Lincoln tied it at 5 in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Lauren Stamp, the Jets went right back ahead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Newman then closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth.

Kinsey had three hits and one RBI to lead Lincoln on offense, while Tori Nienhueser also rapped out three hits. Heimbaugh ended up with two hits and two RBI.

Sarah Westhoff pitched the first 3 1/3 innings while taking the loss for Lincoln. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.

Stamp worked the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Lincoln is now off until it travels to the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invitational on Feb. 19-21.
