Hy-Vee becomes more environmentally responsible

Jefferson City store also opens Quick Care clinic

Hy-Vee Inc. announced in a recent news release that 100 percent of its fresh and private label frozen seafood now comes from responsible sources.

Hy-Vee committed in 2011 to procuring its fresh and frozen seafood from environmentally responsible sources by the end of 2015, according to the news release.

In January 2014, approximately 62 percent of Hy-Vee's fresh and private label frozen seafood was responsibly sourced. And in the last year, Hy-Vee achieved a 38 percent increase - reaching its 100 percent responsible sourcing goal by the end of December 2015.

Hy-Vee strives to sell high-quality seafood that is not only safe for consumption but also harvested or raised in a manner that provides for its long-term viability while minimizing damage to the environment and other sea life, the news release states. To follow through on those commitments, Hy-Vee chose to transition all of its fresh and private label farmed salmon to responsible sources rated Yellow or Green by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program and supplement those options with wild Alaskan salmon.

By engaging in certification strengthening and encouraging shrimp farmers to make improvements, Hy-Vee also was able to source 100 percent of its fresh and private label frozen farmed shrimp from responsible sources.

To better reach its goals, Hy-Vee partnered with FishWise, an environmental nonprofit that promotes the health and recovery of ocean ecosystems through environmentally and socially responsible business practices.

Capital Region Quick Care added

Also new at Hy-Vee in Jefferson City is the addition of the Capital Region Quick Care clinic, which began seeing patients Feb. 1.

The clinic, operated by Capital Region Physicians, is Capital Region Medical Center's first walk-in clinic and first retail clinic.

Plans for the clinic located in the Hy-Vee store at 3721 W. Truman Blvd. were announced last August.

"Health care delivery is changing; patients want convenient access to high quality services that fits into their schedules," said Gaspare Calvaruso, CRMC president, in a news release. "We are addressing the needs of the community by providing walk-in clinic services seven days a week."

The clinic is located just inside the doors of Hy-Vee next to the store's pharmacy.

It is open to everyone two years and older who might need treatment for routine illnesses or common conditions, including sore throat or cough, urinary symptoms, skin rashes and minor injuries.

Capital Region Quick Care hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. The clinic is closed from 1-2 p.m. daily.

For those who do not have a primary care physician but need follow-up care or who would like to establish care with one, Capital Region Quick Care clinic staff will assist in finding patients a primary care physician and scheduling an appointment.

"For patients, a major advantage of Capital Region Quick Care is the connectivity to the resources of the entire Capital Region Physicians network, including more than 130 primary care and specialty providers," said Tom Niekamp, CRMC vice president of physician relations and clinics, in the news release. "What's more, with our robust integration, patient information can be accessed across the medical group, saving time and improving care."

Capital Region Quick Care is linked to the entire Capital Region Physicians group through CRMC's electronic health record, which gives caregivers immediate access to a patient's up-to-date medical information.

"As primary care providers, we recognize the importance for patients to receive the care they need when they need it," said Dr. Randall Haight, CRMC vice president of medical affairs and internal medicine physician. "By providing patient-focused care proactively and conveniently for the patient, we can help those in our community live healthier lives."
