Water rescue on Missouri River

The Regional West Fire Protection District and the Jefferson City Fire Department responded Friday to the Marion Bottoms Conservation Area along the Missouri River for a report of a hunter trapped by flood waters.

The hunter had entered the Conservation Area early Friday morning and when returning to his vehicle discovered that the Missouri River had risen, and the hunter was unable to cross the flood waters due to its current, cutting him off from his vehicle.

Along with Regional West Fire Protection District, the Jefferson City Fire Department deployed a rescue watercraft to cross the moving flood waters to assist the stranded hunter. A total of 10 firefighters responded to the scene to accomplish the rescue.

The Jefferson City Fire Department and the Regional West Fire Department remind citizens of the danger of floodwaters. Use caution around all moving water, and never attempt to cross moving floodwaters in your vehicle or on foot. With the expected heavy rains and rising river levels, caution is advised.
