UPDATE: Authorities investigate Macks Creek death as a homicide

Authorities announced Thursday that preliminary autopsy results indicate a body found near a Macks Creek vacation home on April 25 was that of a homicide victim.

However, authorities had not yet positively identified the victim as that of the caretaker of the property.

The body was found on Monday after the property owner reported to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office that he had been unable to reach the caretaker of the property by telephone.

According to a news release from the Camden County Sheriff's Office, when deputies went to the vacation home near Chapel Bluff Road in southwestern Camden County, they found a body in a wooded area behind the home. Later Camden County Sheriff Dwight Franklin announced that because of the remote location and the need to develop leads, he had requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad.

In a news release sent out April 28, the sheriff’s office said while the investigation is continuing, “all evidence indicates this is an isolated incident and there appears to be no threat to the general public.”

Although the news release did not name a suspect or a motive for the murder, it did say “additional information will be released as it becomes available.”
