Charges filed in Saturday shooting incident

Charges were filed Monday in connection with the shooting of three people Saturday afternoon in Jefferson City.

Jordan Willis, 18, whose address was listed in court documents as 1012 E. High St., and Corey Cotton, 17, whose address was listed as 3521 Knipp Drive, are each charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Monroe Street.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Cotton and Willis, along with a third man not charged, were seen walking away from the area after the shooting.

Cotton was shot and was taken to a local hospital, while Willis and the other man were taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Video surveillance in the area captured Willis, Cotton and the other man engaged in a physical disturbance. Willis is seen firing a gun in the direction of the subject they were fighting as he fled the area on foot. A .40-caliber pistol was recovered along the path Willis, Cotton and the other man traveled.

Two witnesses identified Willis from a photo lineup, and another witness identified him from a video taken at the time of the shooting.

Willis admitted to possessing a firearm when he, Cotton and the other man went to that apartment complex. He said several individuals had Cotton on the ground during the altercation, and one of them took out a gun and pointed it at Cotton. Willis said he fired at the individual who had Cotton on the ground, but he didn’t know how many times he fired his weapon.

Willis also said he was not in possession of a gun until he picked one up off the ground after one of the people he was fighting dropped it.

Cotton and the other two gunshot victims were treated and released.

Cotton told police he was in a large fight and was outnumbered. He didn’t know who had shot him and denied being in possession of a gun at the time.
