LU wins seven events at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Facing fields full of NCAA Division I athletes, Lincoln’s women’s and men’s track and field teams combined to win seven events at the Kansas Relays hosted by the University of Kansas from Thursday through Saturday.

The Lincoln women won four individual events — Venicha Baker in the collegiate 200-meter dash (23.75), Cauldwell in the collegiate triple jump (12.82 meters), Jhevere Hall in the seeded collegiate 800-meter run (2:11.78) and Chrisdale McCarthy in the collegiate 100-meter hurdles (13.43).

The Blue Tigers also won two relays, with McCarthy, Baker, Kimberly Bailey and Diana Cauldwell taking the collegiate 4x100-meter relay in 45.96 and the team of Baker, Hall, Ebony Rose and Kissi-Ann Brown taking the collegiate 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.68.

In addition, Bailey was the runner-up in the collegiate 100-meter dash (11.56) and fifth in the collegiate 200-meter dash (24.38), while Cauldwell came in fourth in the collegiate 100-meter dash (11.90).

On the men’s side, the Lincoln team of Roberto Smith, Miguel Barton, Roger Blake and Stephen Rose won the collegiate 4x100-meter relay in 40.75.

In the seeded collegiate 800-meter run, Jeromia Riley was the runner-up after clocking in at 1:52.26. In the unseeded collegiate 800-meter run, Kevon Robinson came in eighth at 1:55.15.

Smith placed fifth in the collegiate 200-meter dash (21.53) while Barton placed sixth in the collegiate 400-meter dash (48.32).

Competing unattached, Andy Gilmore (Southern Boone High School) placed second in the men’s collegiate high jump (2.10 meters).

Missouri S&T’s John Karsten (Blair Oaks High School) came in fourth in the men’s collegiate hammer throw (57.66 meters).

Louisa Nylander (Jefferson City High School) was part of the Missouri-Kansas City team that took seventh in the women’s collegiate 4x400-meter relay (3:55.45).

In the men’s high jump quadrangular (part of the events that matched up Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado State and Rice in a meet within the meet), Nebraska’s Landon Bartel (Southern Boone High School) won by clearing 2.11 meters.

The Blue Tigers compete in the Drake Relays from Thursday through Saturday.

Lincoln also sent members of its team to the Dewey Allgood Invitational hosted by Missouri S&T on Saturday in Rolla.

Tina Coombs led the way for the Lincoln women by finishing second in the long jump (18-101/2) and fourth in the triple jump (37-83/4).

Jonelle Campbell was second in the triple jump (39-53/4), Kimona Shaw was third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.92) and Nadia Harriott was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.44).

Competing unattached, Lincoln’s Yanique Ellington won the 100-meter dash (11.95) and 200-meter dash (24.81) and Ladonna Richards was second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.15).

For the Lincoln men, Winston Edwards won the 400-meter hurdles, with his time of 53.886 barely topping Pittsburg State’s Jared Page time of 53.890.

Owen Smith was second in the triple jump (49-21/2), Alva Henry was third in the 400-meter hurdles (54.56) and Orneldo Thomas was fourth in the long jump (23-6).

Two former Blue Tigers competed unattached. Romone Hill won the 100-meter dash (10.69) and Mandela Clifford was second in the 200-meter dash (21.77).

Several area women placed in the top eight at the Invitational:

• Missouri Southern’s Melanie Bower (Linn High School) won the pole vault (13-5). That mark is a school record and the second-best in Division II this season.

• Central Missouri’s Amy Dorge was third in the hammer throw (161-4) and seventh in the discus (135-0).

• Missouri Southern’s Allie Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth High School) was fifth in the triple jump (37-8) and seventh in the javelin (106-7). She was also part of the school’s third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (48.20).

• William Woods’ Grace Young (Russellville High School) was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:53.88)

• William Woods’ Madelyn Scrivner (Eldon High School) was seventh in the hammer throw (151-4) and seventh in the shot put (40-5).

• William Woods’ Kaylee Ferrier (Helias High School) was eighth in the hammer throw (146-4).

On the men’s side, here two area competitors finished in the top eight:

• Competing unattached, Dan Raithel (Blair Oaks High School) won the hammer throw (212-3).

• Karsten was third in the hammer throw (189-7), fourth in the discus (157-7) and eighth in the shot put (47-1/4).
