A beautiful day drew more than 350 volunteers to plant trees, provide TLC to local service agencies and otherwise beautify the Jefferson City community.

Serve Jeff City is in its fifth year and already has a following, said organizer Ken Hussey.

“We have a solid core of volunteers who look forward to this day,” he said. “I’ve seen some faces all five years.”

After being treated to pancakes at McClung Park, groups of volunteers were sent to various locations, including city parks.

An Arbor Day observance included education combined with tree planting. At many parks, trees and flowers were planted, along with lots of mulching.

The Lincoln University campus and nearby roundabout were spruced up. Downtown, the new adopt-a-block program found lots of hands to freshen the tree wells for the spring.

United Way of Central Missouri agencies also were given a volunteer boost, such as sorting at the local Central Missouri Food Bank location or updating the Jefferson City Day Care playground.

The backbone of Serve Jeff City, in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Stream Team, continued with more than 80 volunteers working to clean Wears Creek from Capitol Avenue through town as far as to JCMG or Frog Hollow.

“It’s amazing what 350 people can do when they’re spread out across town,” Hussey said.
