Kansas City man charged after child, 2, fatally shot

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 24-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of his 2-year-old daughter.

The Jackson County prosecutor's office said Friday in a release that Courtenay Shaquel Block is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence.

Block's 2-year-old daughter was shot to death Thursday at the family's home. Court records show that when Kansas City police officers arrived at the home the defendant was holding the unresponsive child, who had apparently been shot in the head.

Block told police he kept a loaded handgun in his home and that he heard the victim crying and observed his handgun on the floor next to her. He notified a neighbor, who called police.

The case remains under investigation.
