Langer, Lehman shoot better-ball 60 to take Legends lead

RIDGEDALE, Mo. (AP) — Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman teamed to shoot an 11-under 60 in better-ball play Friday to take the first-round lead in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge.

Langer and Lehman had a 7-under 28 on the front nine on Buffalo Ridge's Springs Course and added four birdies on the back nine.

"Bernhard played extremely well, Bernhard played great," Lehman said. "I played very well, also. We had a lot of chances where we both were looking at birdies, and a lot of times when you're both in that kind of situation where you're both having great chances for birdie, you tend to shoot low scores."

They teamed to win the 2009 event in Georgia.

"I've always embraced team golf, love it," Langer said. "Tom was phenomenal today. He made a ton of birdies, drove it fantastic, hit some good irons and made a ton of putts and it was just fun to watch and fun to be with him."

Defending champions Billy Andrade and Joe Durant were three strokes back along with the teams of Kenny Perry-Scott Hoch, Paul Goydos-Kevin Sutherland and Corey Pavin-Duffy Waldorf.

"Pretty happy," Andrade said. "We ham and egged it well. Joe played well coming in, I played well in between, so it all worked out fine."

Larry Nelson and Bruce Fleisher led the Legends Division for players 65 and older, shooting a 9-under 45 on the par-3 Top of the Rock course. They played nine holes of modified alternate shot and nine of better ball.

"Bruce played really well," Nelson said. "Bruce made a lot of putts today. I didn't make too many, but I hit the ball good. ... Playing a par 3 three days is a little bit different, but it's really enjoyable. You still have to hit good shots, you still have to make putts. You just don't have to drive the ball."

Jim Thorpe and Doug Tewell were second at 47. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were eighth at 53.
