Documentary featuring JC artist to screen at Capitol City Cinema

“If You’re Really Ugly…” an award-winning short film documentary from James Hinkle of Cinemaddact LLC, was recently honored in the Every Picture Tells a Story film competition sponsored by the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City.

The subject of the documentary is Jefferson City-based artist Jim Dyke, who has been drawing caricatures at the Missouri State Fair for more than 20 years.

“If You’re Really Ugly…” will be screening at 6 p.m. April 28 at Capitol City Cinema and will include a Q&A session with Dyke and Hinkle afterward.

Located on State Fair Boulevard between the Grandstand and the Budweiser Big Top Tent, Dyke’s booth has become a gathering point for friends from all walks of life, each as unique as the caricatures he produces. From fairgoers and volunteers to vendors and commissioners, Dyke finds an easy camaraderie with others through his artistic abilities and his genuinely likeable personality.

In addition to his caricature booth at the Missouri State Fair, Dyke owns Cottonstone Art Gallery and Frame Shop in Jefferson City. He has been the editorial cartoonist/graphic artist at the Jefferson City News Tribune for 25 years. When asked about the documentary, Dyke said, “I like that it is not about me — it’s really about my friends and the people around me. A person’s life should really be more about the people around them than it is about themselves.”

Hinkle has been involved in video production for five years. His company is based in Clinton. In addition to short films, he produces television commercials and specializes in audio editing.

“Documentary film-making is about capturing the story, and Jim is a great guy with a lot of great stories. I am thrilled that Jim agreed to let me tell his story, and I’m proud to call him my friend,” Hinkle said.
