Your Opinion: Energy bill supported

Dear Editor:

Legislation, SB1028, is moving through the Missouri General Assembly now and affects the customers of Missouri’s largest energy producers — Ameren Missouri, KCP&L and Empire Electric District. The legislation modernizes our state’s outdated energy policies and would bring Missouri in line with 46 other states that have already updated their regulatory laws.

Modern energy policies will support even greater investments by these utilities and allow them to more effectively plan and manage capital improvements, while improving transparency for the Missouri Public Service Commission’s (MoPSC) oversight of utility operations. The utilities will be able to allocate appropriate costs for critical maintenance of Missouri’s aging energy infrastructure, and fund modernization of the system that will improve reliability and efficiency.

The MoPSC retains its role of financial and technical oversight, and its authority as a consumer advocate and protector. The benefit to Missourians is a real cap on rate increases, improved electric reliability, improved economic competitiveness and jobs growth.

I urge News Tribune readers to carefully research and understand the purposes and benefits of this legislation, and I urge passage of SB1028 today!
